Tamara’s friend from the Netherlands, Hedy, had decided to again visit us for her annual vacation this year. Obviously she is very much taken with the red rock desert vistas in this part of the world. Shortly after she arrived, we decided to take another day trip with her to visit Kolob Canyons, because a year ago the road to the summit was closed and we wanted her to see the most impressive views at the top. After that, we decided to also drive up to Cedar Breaks, now that the snow had melted enough to open the road to the various viewpoints.

Here we arrived at the Visitor Center at Kolob Canyon.

Moxie was delighted to get out of the car and sniff the spots she had visited just a couple of months ago.

As usual, Tamara and Hedy just had to check out the merchandise in the gift shop before we entered the canyon.

Here we had arrived at the parking lot where the road was closed last year.

Tamara was made in the shade.

We arrived at the summit, and I took the photo of Tamara and Hedy with the magnificent views as a backdrop.

After that, we decided to also drive up to Cedar Breaks. As we wound our way up the canyon, we opened the glass roof cover so that Hedy could better appreciate the vistas towering around us.

We arrived at the viewpoints in Cedar Breaks, where Moxie and I had to pose in front of the red rock pinnacles below.

The climb up the canyon had taken a toll on our range, so I decided to stop and charge at the Electrify America site in Cedar City. We actually arrive with more miles than I anticipated, thanks to regenerative braking on the way back down.

I had to wait for a Rivian to finish charging before I could move into that spot and plug in.

I was impressed that, with only 1% more to go to reach our usual 80% charge, we were still receiving 129 kW —way more than twice the speed we'd ever seen at Superchargers.

When the charge finished, we had 219 miles in the battery, more than enough to drive home.

It was getting close to dinner time, so we decided to stop at the Red Fort restaurant to enjoy a meal of Indian cuisine.

At Cedar Breaks, the temperatures had been a delightful 77°F, but we returned to St. George to find that they were more than 30°F hotter! No doubt about it… the climate crisis continues to heat up this planet.

It was a pleasant day trip, and we were glad that Hedy had a chance to view the entire landscape at the top of Kolob Canyons. We really are fortunate to live so close to the inspiring vistas in this southwestern desert —before it turns into another Death Valley.
