Another ICCU Recall and
a Technical Service Bulletin
for My Ioniq 5

December 23, 2024

Hyundai Motors has again issued another recall to inspect and possibly repair the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) in its EVs. Apparently the ICCU is still causing 12V batteries to die prematurely in about 1% of their cars. I have never experienced this problem myself, but am happy to let my local dealer perform that service, just in case it ever happens. As a sidenote, I want to say that I have found it is so much more convenient to have a dealership here in my city, rather than have to drive to Las Vegas with my previous EV.

I had noticed that there was also a Technical Service Bulletin to fix a potential “rattle” in the hatchback lid of the Ioniq 5. Well… I had started to hear just such a rattle when driving over bumpy roads, so I figured that I would ask the dealer to also perform that service. In this case, a technician first had to determine if there really was a rattle, and sure enough, when he drove Rocinante around the lot, he could hear that noise and thus approved to have the repair performed. Below are the usual photos that accompany my narrative.

NOTE: You can click on the following photos and PDFs to open them.

To begin with, here is a PDF copy of the ICCU recall notice.

And this is a PDF copy of the Technical Service Bulletin to fix the "rattle."

I made an appointment with the service department at Findlay Hyundai on the morning of December 4th.

When I pulled into the lot, there were 10,564 miles on the odometer

I noticed a large sign at the entrance announcing that the dealership would be moving to its new facilities in the near future.

I wandered into the showroom, and saw that they had an Ioniq 5 “N” on display.

That race car version is impressive, but I have a pet peeve with front-to-back cupholders.

I also prefer my sliding center console, but I did note that this fixed one had pads on the side for occupants' knees when cornering hard on the race track.

Another difference is that the ”N” model lacks a heads up display, one of my favorite features in Rocinante.

The ”N” does have a rear window wiper, unlike previous Ioniq 5 models. Personally, I don't see the need because my Limited model boasts a digital rear view mirror.

The technicians performed the recall on my ICCU in short order, but told me that they couldn't fix the "rattle" yet until they'd ordered some new parts for it. Oddly enough, when I got home I saw this warning on the display for the first time, yet I already had the vehicle started. Go figure. I have not seen that warning since, so maybe it was just a holdover alert from when it was in the service bay…?

Two weeks later the Service Department called to say that the parts had arrived. They had since moved to their new facilities, and set up an appointment to fix the "rattle." Here I have arrived at the new dealership.

As I pulled in, I saw this sign pointing straight ahead to the Service Department. Wrong! It was actually to the right. They need to fix the arrow on that sign.

It was only after I drove all the way around the building that I spotted the covered area for dropping off cars for service.

This truly is a much better, more spacious dealership. Inside the covered pull-through bay was a counter inside a glassed area where the technicians would check in the customers.

I again wandered into the showroom, and saw the ”N” model on display, this time with the hood open.

Unlike other Ioniq 5 models, the ”N” lacks a frunk, and instead has a plastic cover mounted over the motor compartment.

Peering underneath that cover, I was pleased to see that it at least had the same opening cover for changing the cabin filter, just like in Rocinante. That accessibility makes it a much easier task than in my previous EVs.

The waiting area was also very spacious, with comfortable chairs, a counter for those working on laptops, and a variety of snacks and refreshments.

I noticed that there were covered plates on the side tables next to the chairs.

When you pushed on those plates, an angled port pops up with both a power outlet and dual USB ports. Clever!

I was even more impressed by the multiple plugs on the counter that could accommodate whatever type of device one might bring to the waiting area. Convenient!

It hardly took any time for the technicians to install the parts to fix the "rattle" in my hatchback lid. This photo from the TSB shows the original "side guide" mounted inside the cargo opening. You can see that the "ribbed" portion is recessed along the top.

Here is one of the new replacements in which the "ribbed" section is now larger, thicker, and sticks up from the part, giving the lid a much tighter fit.

Similarly, this photo from the TSB shows the original "side bumper" on the lid itself with a small “wedge” to press against the corresponding “side guide” on the car.

As you can see, the new replacement is now much thicker and more solid, rather than having just a small wedge.

The TSB states that two washers are to be placed over the bolts to make the "side bumpers" even thicker.

I assume that the technicians did this, for I can barely see some dark washers when peering underneath the mounted “side bumpers”.

The TSB also suggests adjusting the gap between the lid and the car body by turning counterclockwise the overslam bumpers.

I found that the technicians had extended mine out only a half turn, with plenty of turns left if ever needed.

Finally, the TSB instructs the technicians to loosen the bolts of the tailgate striker a half turn, and then hit it moderately with a mallot about 5 times.

When I look at the striker, it seems to me that it is now a whole new part, already resized and set in the recommended position.

The first page of my invoice gives the details of the two services performed.

The second page only reiterates that the service was initiated on December 4, but finally completed on December 23.

I am very pleased with the service I have received from Findlay Hyundai. On the way home I listened as carefully as I could when driving over the same bumpy roads and… couldn’t hear any squeak or rattle whatsoever! Kudos to the technicians! Rocinante now stays as quiet and relaxing as when we first took delivery nearly a year ago.
