Looks like my birthday came a bit early this year! Tamara had asked me what I wanted, and the only thing I could think of was a “12V Jump Starter” for our Ioniq 5. I was delighted to receive a notification that UPS delivered it this afternoon.

Lately I’ve read a few reports about 12V batteries dying in electric cars, particularly in the models sold by the Hyundai Motor Group: Kia, Genesis, and Hyundai. In fact, there is a new recall to fix the ICCU in all those EVs, and I believe that it will likewise eliminate such problems with their 12V batteries. I’ve already got an appointment with my local dealer to perform the recall later this week.

I applaud Hyundai for taking a proactive approach to repair potential breakdowns in their EVs —and keep their customers satisfied. I certainly hope I will never experience a problem with my Ioniq 5’s 12V battery, at least until it really has worn out after 4 or 5 years, like happened with those in my Nissan LEAF and my Tesla Model 3.

Nonetheless, just in case the recall doesn’t fix the problem, I wanted a jump starter device as a backup. How I wish that such clever inventions had existed years ago when my LEAF’s battery died inside a convention center with no other vehicles nearby to jump start it! The photo at the top of the page is the model from Amazon that I now have for such emergencies.

I happened to have some travel pouches in my bathroom cupboard that would do nicely to house and protect both the jump starter and its cables.

I have tucked those pouches with the jump starter components into the lower left corner of my frunk along with all my 240V and 120V adapters, the Universal Mobile Connector with its J1772 adapter, and my V2L adapter.

Fingers crossed that I’ll never actually need to use the 12V Jump Starter, but knowing how Murphy’s Law works, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
