La cultura y civilización de Latinoamérica

As its subtitle clarifies, Prójimos is an e-text, distributed in “.pdf” format, for use in advanced Spanish courses on the culture and civilization of Latin America. Said format boasts many convenient and desirable features that are lacking in paper-and-ink books. For example:
- Thanks to the unique capabilities of computers, readers can search for any word or phrase throughout the entire text —a function that greatly outshines any printed index, no matter how detailed.
- The text comes complete with hyperlinked bookmarks: users merely need to click on said links to immediately jump to a particular chapter or subsection. Similarly, the table of contents is also hyperlinked to the actual pages it identifies.
- Rather than mere grayscale images, the text’s numerous graphics, illustrations, photos, maps, tables, and timelines are in full color:
- Of course, those who prefer to read from paper instead of a computer screen can always print pages, sections, chapters, or even the entire text with their own personal printer. In point of fact, the text’s pages are formatted for standard 8.5" x 11" paper, and if one prints them on both sides of the sheets, it is possible to put them in a ringed binder and see the graphics that extend over two pages in proper perspective.
- More importantly, even if one spends money on paper and ink cartridges to print the text, the cost is only a fraction of the price of its previous, paper-and-ink editions —since it is no longer necessary to pay inflated percentages to publishers, printers, distributors, and bookstores.
- As an added bonus, there is also an accompanying homework program available, Trivialidades, version 3.0, to help users learn and retain the numerous names, dates, events, maps, timelines, concepts, and other relevant facts covered in the e-text.
