EV vs. Oil Subsidies
Mark D Larsen
Whenever an article appears touting the benefits of electric vehicles, inevitably a naysayer will post comments that echo the old, worn-out petrolganda cliché:
Why should I have to help pay for your EV with my tax dollars? Why don’t you pay for it yourself?

I usually answer the question with a question:

Why should I have to help pay for your gasoline with my tax dollars? Why don’t you pay for it yourself?

Evidently those naysayers have never really thought about how our tax dollars have subsidized the oil industry for decades —let alone how the numbers compare. Here is a pie chart with the latest tallies since EVs entered the market at the end of 2010, extrapolated from this report. I hope to update the data every quarter.
